May 25, 2010 – Vienna, Austria
We visit St. Stephan’s Cathedral, a massive Gothic church that stands in the center of Vienna. We climbed the massive 450 foot high south tower, with 340+ steps. After catching our breath, we admire the impressive view of the roof of the cathedral as well as that of downtown Vienna.
On Graben street, we visit the 70 foot tall plague column – a statue that commemorates the plague victims of Vienna in 1679. Nearby, we visit the other beautiful Baroque church, St. Peters. At 3:00 PM, we were treated to a free organ concert in the church. The incredible acoustics of the central dome made the organ sound like it was coming from heaven.
Finally, we ended our walk on the street of Kohlmarkt, with the dome of the Hofburg palace looming in the background at the end of the street. This street also is lined with touristy upscale shops that are very overpriced.
