Switzerland 2016 - Hoher Mountain

Another day another mountain to explore in Appenzell. Today it’s the Hoher Kasten, a 1791 meter peak in the Appenzell Alps overlooking the Rhine.

Our cable car starts at the base station in Brulisau a little south of Appenzell.

Originally built in 1964, the cable car, the system underwent extensive upgrades in the 1990s and recently celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in 2014.

It takes about 8 minutes to reach the summit and we travel about 2600 meters along the way.

Originally just a hotel, the recently constructed rotating restaurant on the top floor offers breakfast lunch and dinner with a 360 degree view of the Alps and won 1st prize as one of the best Swiss restaurants.

At the summit is a new attraction opened just this year – the Europe-trail.

The Europe-trail encircles the summit and runs for about 260 meters with 5 different viewing platforms.

From the viewing platforms you can see the northeast peaks of the Alps, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy.

The trail construction was started in 2015 and completed in the Spring of 2016.

The alpine garden near the rotating restaurant has about 400 rare mountain flowers and herbs.
