When we left Nice for Marseille, we decided to drive through the beautiful 25 kilometer long Gorges du Verdon – a five hour drive!

The 25 kilometer long Gorges du Verdon is one of Europe’s most beautiful river canyons. It was carved out of the surrounding limestone hills by the Verdon River.

In some places along its length it reaches depths of 700 meters.

It’s very popular with tourists on the French Riviera because you can drive around most of its rim. Hikers and climbers have many spots to enjoy, and kayakers can trek through its many rapids.

Between 1929 and 1975, five separate dams were built along it’s length.

The Verdon River flows into an artificial lake called Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon at the end of the canyon.
